One of my favorite desserts to make also happens to be one of my favorites to eat: chocolate cake. A rich, tender chocolate cake is surprisingly easy to make—in my opinion, far easier than vanilla cake. But not all chocolate cake recipes are created equally. They can easily end up crumbly or dry, and sometimes the flavor can fall flat.

Heat oven to 350°F. Grease bottom and sides of rectangular pan, 13x9x2 inches, with shortening; lightly flour. In medium bowl, mix flour, baking soda and salt; set aside. 2. In large bowl, beat sugar and butter with electric mixer on medium speed, scraping bowl occasionally, until fluffy. Beat in eggs, one at a time, until smooth and blended.

Divide batter evenly among muffin cups. Place ice cream cone upside down on batter in each cup. Bake 14 to 19 minutes or until toothpick inserted in cake comes out clean. The two-ingredient frosting - essentially cream and chocolate melted together, then cooled until thick enough to swoop and swirl - can be made in the same bowl used for the cake batter. You can sprinkle flaky salt, chopped toasted nuts or sprinkles on top too. But, frosted or not, this cake welcomes coffee, tea or ice cream.

Icing Instructions. Combine the powdered sugar, milk, and peppermint extract in a small bowl. Whisk together until smooth. The glaze should pour off the spoon in a thick white stream. Add a teaspoon more milk to thin it, or 1-2 tablespoons more powdered sugar to thicken it, if necessary. Drizzle the glaze over the cake.

In a large bowl, beat together cake mix, eggs, oil, and water for 1-2 minutes, or until well-combined. Pour the cake batter into the greased/lined pan. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Allow the cake to cool slightly for 10-15 minutes.

Use this easy to follow tutorial: Cover cardboard circle with foil. Attach several strips of tape to top edge of largest tin. Place tin upside down (i.e. taped side down) in center of cardboard circle. Attach a smaller tin on top if desired using tape. Using strips of double sided tape, attach candy bars around bottom tin.
