Jump to Recipe Print Recipe I would say that Dduk Guk is one of those dishes that I take for granted. I've eaten it for New Years Day almost every year for my entire life! It's a Korean tradition, and to me, it just doesn't feel like the new year without it.

Classic Vegan Korean Rice Cake Soup! Growing up, Korean Rice Cake Soup, or Dduk Guk (떡국) was a classic comfort dish I ate frequently so I had to take a stab at making a Vegan Dduk Guk. Traditionally, the recipe is actually quite simple. It is made with a light broth of either anchovy or beef with chewy Korean rice cake, sliced egg and seaweed to top.

Rice Cake Soup (Ddukguk 떡국) What is Tteokguk? Tteokguk is a traditional Korean soup that is made with a savory broth (usually beef or anchovy) with round rice cake slices cooked in it. It's eaten year-round but on New Year's day, it's a must for Koreans to have at least a bowl of Tteokguk/Ddukguk (떡국).

Dduk guk/ tteok guk ( 떡국), also known as Korean rice cake soup, is a classic soup eaten on Korean New Year Day (Seollal - 설날) to "gain" a year and for good luck. The soup is seasoned with beef, soup soy sauce, fish sauce, and sesame oil. It also has a slight viscosity due to the sliced rice cakes (dduk/tteok).
